Škocjan caves, located in the bosom of classical Karst in the southwestern region of Slovenia, are the only monument in Slovenia on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites and have been since 1986. One of the largest underground canyons in the world is best known for its exceptional volume - height of the underground channels goes up to 140m near Hanke channel, where you can admire the treasures of the natural world on the Cerkvenik bridge. The bridge itself offers mesmerizing views and is one of the larges underground facilities in the world.
During your trip to the Škocjan caves you can enjoy beautiful natural rock formations, underground Reka river and the breathtaking largest discovered underground cavern in Europe (and one of the largest in the world!). The cavern is of colossal proportions and sometimes it’s hard to believe it’s the real deal and not some computer-generated imagery imagery from Lord of the Rings. When you step into the cavern is like being transported to Tolkien’s imaginery world and you can almost feel like you’re about to witness the battle between Balrog and Gandlaf in Khazad-dûm - the chamber is THAT huge!
You are always accompanied by the guide who will point out interesting points along your 2 hour walk in the caves (but don’t worry, it’s just a 2 km easy walk) and it’s completely safe - the infrastructure is top notch with secure pathways, railings and bridges. All in all, Škocjan caves are a must see for any tourist stopping by in Slovenia - you won’t see such an enormous cavern in the rest of Europe, let alone walk across it on a bridge. The beautiful rock formations, waterfalls, rimstone pools and natural windows will take your breat away and if you’re lucky, you can spot one of the cave’s endemites: world-famous cave salamander (Proteus anguinus), crustaceans, beetles or large nursery colonies of several bat species.
What about transfer and prices?
You can get to Škocjan cave from Ljubljana by public transport (train or a bus) to Divača and then take a shuttle bus that will take you to Škocjan caves. The trip itself might take quite a lot of time since public transport isn’t exactly great in Slovenia. For a group of 4 public transfer will cost about 60e both ways and will take approximately 4-5 hours. Seems like a hassle, doesn’t it?
That’s why we’ve put together a better solution: let us be your driver for the day! Enjoy a private ride (not a shared shuttle!) for 75e both ways. And we’ll even wait for you - for no extra charge! Visit to Škocjan cave is possible 365 days a year.
